A Mark That Becomes Part of the Object
Laser engraving works by focusing a high-powered beam onto a surface through a lens, then steering it with software that controls speed, power and pulse. Where the beam lands it removes or permanently alters a thin layer of the material, leaving a mark that is part of the object rather than a coating sitting on top of it.
That is the whole appeal. Printed branding on a mug or a pen eventually scratches, fades in the sun or comes off in a dishwasher. An engraved mark stays exactly as it was on the day it left the workshop, which is why it suits awards meant to sit on a shelf for years and tools that live in a workshop.
It also reaches detail that a hand engraver cannot. Fine serif type, a full coat of arms, a QR code, a signature or a line of Swahili text all reproduce cleanly at a few millimetres across.

How Each Material Takes a Mark
Different materials behave differently under a laser. Knowing which does what is usually the difference between a good result and a wasted item.
Acrylic
Engraves to a frosted white against the clear body, giving high contrast with no ink. The standard choice for awards and illuminated signage.
Wood & MDF
Burns to a warm brown that contrasts naturally with the grain. Depth is easy to achieve, so wood also suits cut-through shapes.
Glass & Crystal
Frosts to a soft matt finish. Glass is heat-sensitive, so we work shallow and controlled to avoid chipping, which is the right trade for a clean edge.
Coated Metals
Powder-coated and painted metals engrave by lifting the coating to reveal bright bare metal underneath. Very high contrast, ideal for tumblers.
Bare & Anodised Metal

Engraving, Marking and Etching Are Not the Same Thing
The three terms get used interchangeably by suppliers. They describe different processes, and the one you need depends on the object.
Engraving
The beam removes material to cut a recess you can feel with a fingertip. It is the deepest and most durable of the three, and the right choice for awards, signage and anything that will be handled hard for years.
Marking
The beam changes the colour of the surface using low, controlled heat without cutting into it. It leaves the material intact, which matters on thin-walled items and precision components where depth would weaken the piece.
Etching
A shallow melt that raises a fine frosted finish, sitting between the other two in depth. Common on glass, crystal and coated metals where a soft, elegant contrast reads better than a deep cut.

How Engraving Is Quoted
Engraving is priced per job rather than off a rate card, because machine time is the real cost and four things drive it.
Your file has to become a clean vector path. A tidy logo takes minutes. A scanned crest that needs redrawing takes longer.
The item is jigged and aligned, then power, speed and frequency are dialled in for that exact material and finish.
Fine detail must run slower with tighter line spacing to stay crisp, so an intricate crest takes longer than plain text.
Depth is built up by passing the beam over the same area repeatedly. A deep cut simply takes more passes than a surface mark.
